Finally German Parliament passed a new law that makes it easier for trans* and non-binary people to have their gender legally recognized based on self-determination. This puts an end to pathologization and procedures that were deemed unconstitutional. This brings up a lot of questions, some of them fueled by anti-trans narratives. So this is one main area of our work in the field of tin*.
At our regular round table an overview of the new law and information on the administrative procedure was presented. We discussed positive implications for the trans*, inter* and non-binary population and questions and concerns voiced by the community. We listened to a talk on inclusive gender equality politics and presented our evaluation of the new law, expecting lots of positive effects, but also acknowledging its limitations and pitfalls.
In close contact with the Department of Public order and the registry office we are going to educate on the new law and support tin* citizens as well as other departments e.g. social services, housing and youth work.
