Hasselt

Policy

n the City of Hasselt’s Governance Agreement (2019 – 2024), three specific policy objectives regarding LGBTQIA+ matters are outlined. The first is to develop a comprehensive LGBTQ+ policy that transcends traditional boundaries.

Secondly to collaborate with LGBTQ+ organizations to implement a comprehensive rainbow policy, combat prejudice, and combat LGBTQ+ violence.

A third policy objective is to strive for an inclusive Hasselt with inclusive buildings, public spaces, services, and communication, ensuring full societal participation and to create a welcoming and inclusive city for all.

Goal

In 2022 we conducted a comprehensive analysis to gauge the experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community in Hasselt. These research findings and policy recommendations shaped tangible actions with a focus on four key areas:

  1. Inclusive Services and Policies: We pursue inclusive policies through research, fostering collaboration with experts and the community to enable everyone to be themselves, promoting sustainable local partnerships and diverse participation.
  2. Building Support: We enhance support in Hasselt and target groups by raising awareness and understanding, symbolized by displaying the rainbow flag on occasions like the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) to emphasize our solidarity.
  3. Health and Well-being: We address specific needs and challenges of sexual and gender diversity in healthcare and well-being, aiming to create accessible services in cooperation with the sector.
  4. Safety and Equal Opportunities: We prioritize safety in Hasselt’s streets, hospitality, and nightlife, working with partners to ensure equal opportunities in the city.

Cooperation with interest groups

We cooperate closely with ‘Regenbooghuis Limburg’ and countless other LGBTQIA+ organisations (Cavaria, Queerup, Pride vzw,..) Unia, the federal body for equal opportunities and anti-discrimination. The rainbow community also consistently participates in the city’s ‘bar inclusief,’ a participation platform focusing on equal opportunities. In 2024, we aim to focus on stakeholders within the field of security, such as the police, as well as stakeholders associated with nightlife.
